Blue came with me this morning

I decided to walk down to Pebble Beach this morning and as I walked past Margaret and Jack’s house, Blue came out and walked with me.

Blue has gotten his annual hair cut and he is enjoying the cool weather we are having this morning.  It was in the mid 50s at 8:00 when I left for the walk.  I think Blue decided it was a little too cool for a swim since he normally dives in whenever he is around the river.  For some reason he stayed up on the bank this morning.

As we were walking down the road, Blue was running ahead of me most of the time and marking his territory if you know what I mean.  It got me to thinking about how when a human goes to the bathroom, the goal is to empty the bladder while a dog seems to always save a bit so they are able to mark their territory when necessary.  It is funny what I get to thinking about on my walks.

I don’t know what these flowers are really called but I call them parachutes since that is what they remind me of when I see them in bloom.

Sunday morning walk

The walk this morning was good.  I walked by the cactus I have been writing about and there doesn’t seem to be much of a change.

I will keep watching it and keep ya updated.

Chance of Thunderstorms

The skies were starting to look dark this morning and the prediction is for a chance of thunderstorms so I didn’t take a chance on walking this morning.  I did have some stuff to throw on the metal pile and the dump so I drove down to where the cactus is blooming just so I could keep everyone updated.  There was one Bloom and the others are getting ready to come out.

Cactus starting to bloom

On my walk this morning I noticed that some of the cactus is starting to bloom.

I will keep my eye on it and update with new pictures when it blooms.

Jack told me that several years ago an expert from the Witte Museum in San Antonio came out to the ranch and told Jack that every species of cactus native to Texas is someplace along the back road.  This is the road that I walk everyday and I can testify that there is a lot of different species of cactus plus some Yucca plants too.

Uneventful walk

I went for my morning walk and nothing happened and I didn’t see anything interesting.  I walk back to the tree where the gnome showed up in one picture but I didn’t see it again.  I took some pictures but I didn’t see the gnome in the pictures either.  I guess it was a one time thing with the sun shining just right.  It is starting to get overgrown up there and due to the road being washed out, we can even get a mower up there.  It is a shame since we put a bench up there at Scenic Overlook and it was a nice place to just sit and relax.  Maybe we can get a bulldozer and fill in the road.

Nice morning

It was a nice morning for a walk except that the mosquitos are starting to come out.  They weren’t too bad this morning unless you stopped walking and then they attacked so I kept walking most of the time.

I did stop long enough to take a picture of this dead tree at the picnic area.  My tree expert Nephew, Darren tells me that if a tree gets too much soil around the base of the tree or too high up the base of the tree, it will cause the tree to die for some reason.  The picnic area is one place on the ranch that floods almost every time we get a heavy rain so a lot of top soil gets left on the ground at the picnic area and over the years, the base of the trees get more soil than designed and they die.  This had to be a pretty tree years ago.

Morning walk

I went for a walk this morning.  It is a nice cool morning and I need to get back into the habit of walking every day the weather permits.  I didn’t see anything really interesting but decided to take a picture of another tree.

I like trees and take photos of them all the time.  I find it interesting that only one of the readers of this blog spotted the gnome in the picture of the tree I took on April 14th.  An Air Force buddy of mine was the only one who spotted or at least the only one who commented on it.  He is a Photo Interpreter who I served with at the 497th in the mid 60s.  It is good he still has the good eye.  I am sure others will go back and look at it again and maybe they will spot it too.  Let me know if you can’t see it and I will point it out to you.  I went back the next day and it was gone.  Woo eerie spooky

Wild Turkey

On my walk yesterday I heard a lot of wild turkeys but didn’t see any.  This morning I didn’t go out for a walk or go fishing due to the rain we had yesterday so one wild turkey came up to the house to check on me.  It is pretty rare to only see one since they normally run in a flock.  This one is hanging around the front yard so I guess there is some good eating out there.

Walking instead of fishing

I decided to go for a walk this morning instead of feeding the fish.  It is a good thing I didn’t watch the local weather this morning because it started drizzling on me on the way home and it is raining pretty good right now.  We need the rain and I am not so sweet that a little rain will melt me.

I walked up to Scenic Overlook and then done to Paradise Cove.  I am always amazed at some of the shapes of trees around here.

The only thing I saw at Paradise Cove was the cattle from the ranch across the river.  They were pretty close to the bank and I sure hope the bank doesn’t cave in with their weight and they end up in the river.

I walked down to the Picnic area and saw this flock of birds up the River.  They were pretty far away and it is hard to hold my little Sony still when I have to zoom in but you can get the idea.

Feeding the fish and turtles

I went out this morning to do some fishing.  I decided to try out Salado Creek.  I think I should have stayed home.  I picked a nice spot opposite of a large Cottonwood tree.

DSC00472_800x600

On my first cast, the line hung up and the hook landed in some branches on the bank of the Creek.  It was stuck real good and the line broke and I lost my hook, line and sinker including the bobber.  I walked back to the truck and got the line put back together.  Finally got a  line in the water.

DSC00473_800x600

But the fish weren’t biting at this spot so I move farther up the creek.

DSC00476_800x600

This looked like a good spot with the tree in the water and I have had some luck in the past here.  It is a nice spot to not only fish but to just relax.

DSC00477_800x600

After a bit, this turtle came up to see what I was doing.

DSC00475_800x600

The turtle must have gone back in the water and told the fish that I was feeding them because I started getting some nibbles.  I lost a few worms and then caught this big one.

DSC00480_800x600

I’ve got bigger fish in my aquarium.  I decide to quit for the day and on the way back to the truck, I spotted this good size Carp trying to get up the San Antonio River.

DSC00484_800x600

The River and the Creek are really low right now and there is only a small channel where the River flows past.

Fishing

I got out early this morning and went down to Pebble Beach to do some fishing.  I had been down there earlier this week in the afternoon but all I got was a little sunburned.

This morning was nice, about 65 degrees F (19C) with just enough of a breeze to keep the bugs off.  Since I was alone, you will have to visualize me sitting in the chair with my rod in hand.  I got some nibbles this morning and even managed to catch one but put it back to grow a little.
