Pig Hunting

Jack has two of his High School classmates staying with them for a few days, Julius Tolbert and Jerry Day.  Jerry is a hunter from way back and has two rifles that he bought with him.  Last night Jerry and I went down to a place where the pigs are known to hang out.  We spread out some corn for them to nibble on.  This morning Jerry and I took his van and Margaret took Julius in her car and we went to the place before dawn.  Jerry and I had the rifles and we sat in the back of his van and waiting for the little piggies to come out and eat.  They didn't come.  There is nothing more boring than to go hunting and all you do is sit there, at least with fishing, you can watch the bobber float.  We stay out for about an hour and then gave it up.  We will keep checking the corn and see if they are eating it.  They might have migrated somewhere else.  It is possible that Mike has scared them all away.  Mike is such a hunter and he will eat anything, maybe they flew the coop.

Fishing

Margaret, Jerry Day and I went fishing this evening or rather we went down and fed the fish this evening.  For those that don't know Jerry, he is a classmate of Jack's from High School.  We weren't having much luck using rods and reels.  Jerry and I talked about setting out a trout line tomorrow so Margaret went and got the net so we could catch so bait for the trout line.  Margaret didn't have much luck with the seine net.

So I gave it a try.

P1020873 I didn't have much luck either.  We finally decided that it was the net's fault because of some of the lines being cut off or something.  It couldn't have been something we were doing wrong, right?

Jerry just sat over there and fished but he didn't have any luck either.

P1020871 Probably something wrong with the pole or the bait or something.

Rio Grandes

P1020863 Yesterday Mike and I saw this down at Pebble Beach.  Those that read this blog often will recognize this as a spawning site for Rio Grandes.  It seems like we have been seeing these places for a long time.  I wonder what the spawning period is for Rio Grandes?  I guess I could look it up and maybe I will later.

P1020867 This morning I was struck by the sun coming up over the trees and all the different shades and hues of green God made for our enjoyment.  It seems like there are a 1,000 plus different tints depending on where the light strikes or the ripples in the water and all of this against the pretty blue skies of Texas.  It doesn't get any better than this.

Late walk

Mike and I got started late this morning on our walk.  We normally like to get out by at least 7:30 so it is still a little cool but I got busy this morning and time slipped away and next thing I knew it was 9:00.  It wasn't too bad this morning, it seems like all the really hot weather is north of us around Dallas where they have had several days over 100 while I don't believe we have had any or maybe one or two that snuck in there.

We walked down to the Picnic area and while it was a nice walk we really didn't see much.  The birds were singing and the fish were jumping but other than that, it was quiet.

I did see an Egret way off up the river and I tried to take a picture of it but it was too far off.  I like to watch them fly along the river.  They follow the course of the river and look so clean with their white feathers against the greens and the browns of the rest of the country.

Wild Turkeys

Mike and I went on our walk this morning and as we were coming up to Margaret and Jack's house I saw three wild turkeys crossing the road.  They had been up in Margaret and Jack's back yard behind the garage.  Mosquito and Blue were in the front of the garage and they saw us coming and they came out to meet us and then they saw the Turkeys.  Mosquito chased them and Mike took off too.  Blue acted like he didn't know they existed.  I could hear the Turkeys flying off to roost someplace towards the river but I couldn't see them anywhere.

Naturally I had my camera in my pocket and by the time I got it out and turned on, the Turkeys were gone.  I think it must be some sorta law or something, if you have the camera out and ready, nothing will happen; if you don't, then something will pop up.

We finished our walk and Blue and Mike got to go swimming, I looked for rocks and didn't find anything interesting and Mosquito went back to bed.  Just a typical lazy summer day at the ranch.
